THIS IS A CEU PRESENTATION
In 1976 one of the co-presenters of this workshop began an extensive training process with Vernon Johnson, the father of addiction intervention. Predicated on these fundamental Johnsonion methods, he eventually developed his own unique model for conducting therapeutic interventions and named his model “Raising the Bottoms©”. Raising the Bottoms© (RTB) is a unique blend of traditional Johnson Intervention wisdom and a series of task-oriented strategies providing the interventionist with a clear framework for raising the bottoms of the intervention team members, the addict and the treatment process.
On Thursday, September 22nd , John and Shawn Leadem will be joining with the Society for the Advancement for Sexual Health (SASH) at their 2016 annual national conference. The conference, titled “Integrating Heart, Mind, and Body in Pursuit of Sexual Health” will run from September 22nd through Saturday September 24th. John and Shawn will be presenting early on the first day of the conference to introduce participants to the RTB model and to present this unique intervention model’s specific relationship with the theme and spirit of this conference.
The pervasive shame found in sex addiction is unparalleled in other addictive disorders. Families fractured by sex addiction often feel obliged to maintain the subterfuge even while burning in the flames of betrayal. This model goes beyond the traditional notion that the main objective is to get the addict into treatment and holds that a successful intervention gets all involved in the treatment needed to match their identified needs.
The model addresses the therapeutic needs of the concerned others in a way that greatly reduces the protagonist’s resistance, promoting a shared model of recovery rather than the “addict as the identified patient model” which can be shaming and often backfires. RTB also seeks to raise the bottom for treatment providers by providing training to those who desire to provide assistance not just for the sex addict but to all who may have been injured at the “scene of the crash.”
The purpose of this course is to provide healthcare professionals the information necessary to understand the nuances of intervention especially as it relates to the unique ways in which sex addiction impacts the entire family system. Attendees will learn how Raising the Bottoms© is uniquely suited for addressing these specific nuances of sex addiction treatment and how it differs from other intervention models.
